Boat rental at Lake Maggiore

On the Italian shores you can rent a licence-free motorboat by the hour or the day; in the Swiss part around Locarno and Ascona the licence-free boats are smaller. The rules differ between Piedmont, Lombardy, Switzerland and Lake Orta: here is which applies where, which boat to pick, and what the companies below charge.

The 28 companies ↓

The rules

No licence (Italy)
In Italian waters, on both lakes: up to 40.8 hp (30 kW) engine power, within 6 nautical miles of the shore. Bigger engines need a boating licence. Jet skis always need one. Source
No licence (Switzerland)
In the Swiss waters of Ticino, around Locarno, Ascona, Brissago and Gambarogno, Swiss law applies: a licence is needed for more than 6 kW (about 8 hp), and the driver must be at least 14. Source
Near the shore (whole lake)
The Italian–Swiss treaty for Lake Maggiore: within 150 m of the shore, motorboats may only come in, leave or moor, by the shortest route and at no more than 10 km/h. Reed beds and protected zones are off limits. Source
West shore (Piedmont)
On the Piedmont side (Arona, Stresa, Verbania, Cannobio): 45 km/h (about 25 knots) at most beyond the 150 m band, by day and night; at night 14 km/h if your boat only has an all-round white light. No motorboats between Isola San Giovanni and the Pallanza shore in Verbania. Keep 50 m from the ferries. Source
Fondotoce reserve
In the Fondo Toce nature reserve at the mouth of the Toce, marked by yellow buoys, only sailing, rowing and pedal boats may go about; motorboats may only cross it on their way out. Source
East shore (Lombardy)
On the Lombardy side (Sesto Calende, Angera, Laveno, Luino): no petrol or diesel engines in the first 50 m except to come in or leave straight to the shore. Beyond 150 m, 27 knots at most by day; at night 10 knots, or 7 knots for boats under 7 m with only an all-round white light. In the Gulf of Angera only dead slow, and no water skis or jet skis. Source
Lake Orta
Its own rules: within 100 m of the shore motorboats only cross straight in or out, at 7 km/h at most. Elsewhere 20 knots by day and 4 knots at night. No boats over 6 tonnes or wider than 3.5 m, and no jet skis or water skis between Isola San Giulio and the east shore. Source

A summary, not legal advice. Each country enforces its own part of the lake. The rental company briefs you before you leave, and its rules and the local ordinances apply.

Which boat?

Licence-free motorboat (Italy)

Up to 40.8 hp, for a family or a small group. Enough to reach the Borromean Islands or the next town. The usual choice for a first time.

Licence-free boat (Switzerland)

No more than 6 kW, about 8 hp: slower, for a gentle trip along the Locarno and Ascona shore.

With a licence

Bigger engines for longer crossings on a long lake. You show your licence when you pick it up.

With a skipper

Someone else drives: no licence, no rules to learn across three regions and two countries, and they know where to stop.

Sailing boat

Two thermal winds: the Tramontana from the north in the night and morning, the Inverna from the south in the afternoon. Bareboat if you can sail, otherwise with a skipper.

Good to know

  • Bring an ID. Most companies take a deposit, and some ask for a card.
  • Ask whether fuel is included: some prices include it, others charge for what you use.
  • In the Swiss part, around Locarno and Ascona, Swiss rules apply and rentals are priced in francs. Ask the rental company where the border runs before you set off.
  • Keep clear of the ferries and their piers, of swimmers, and of divers’ buoys.

Questions people ask

Can I rent a boat on Lake Maggiore without a licence?

Yes. In the Italian part, in towns such as Stresa, Baveno, Verbania, Arona or Luino, you can drive a boat with up to 40.8 hp (30 kW) without a licence, within 6 nautical miles of the shore. In the Swiss part the limit is 6 kW, about 8 hp. Jet skis always need a licence.

Can I rent a boat without a licence in Locarno or Ascona?

Yes, but a small one. Swiss law applies there: without a licence you may drive up to 6 kW (about 8 hp), from the age of 14. Bigger boats need a licence or a skipper.

How fast can I go?

Within 150 m of the shore, 10 km/h everywhere on Lake Maggiore, and only to come in or leave. Further out: 45 km/h on the Piedmont side; 27 knots by day and 10 at night on the Lombardy side. On Lake Orta, 20 knots by day and 4 at night.

Can I take a motorboat on Lake Orta?

Yes, with its own rules: keep out of the 100 m band along the shore except to come in or leave, at 7 km/h at most; 20 knots by day and 4 at night elsewhere. Big boats (over 6 tonnes or 3.5 m wide) are not allowed, and jet skis are banned between Isola San Giulio and the east shore.

Which winds should I know about?

Lake Maggiore has two local winds. The Tramontana blows down the lake from the north through the night and into the morning; in the afternoon the Inverna blows up the lake from the south. Both are most regular on clear, settled days.
